If you live in the Coachella Valley or the Phoenix area, you have probably seen it: cloudy white spots on the lower half of your windows that do not come off with regular glass cleaner. Those are hard water spots, and desert homes get more of them than almost anywhere else.
What hard water spots are
Hard water carries dissolved minerals, mostly calcium and magnesium. When a drop of that water dries on glass, the water evaporates and the minerals stay behind. One drop is barely visible. Hundreds of them, dried over and over in the same spot, turn into a chalky film.
Why desert homes get them so often
- Sprinklers. This is the biggest cause we see. Overspray hits the same windows several times a week, and the heat dries each drop fast.
- Hard water supply. Much of Southern California and Arizona has hard water, so every splash carries minerals.
- Heat and sun. Water dries in minutes on hot glass, which leaves more mineral behind than slow drying would.
- Washing the car or patio. Hose spray that reaches the windows does the same thing as a sprinkler.
Why regular cleaning does not remove them
Most glass cleaners are made for dust, fingerprints and grime. Mineral deposits bond to the surface of the glass, so wiping just moves the cleaner around them. Scrubbing hard with the wrong pad can scratch the glass, which makes the problem worse.
Light spots vs. etching
Fresh spots sit on top of the glass and can usually be removed with the right products and technique. Spots left for months or years can start to etch the glass, meaning the minerals have actually eaten into the surface. Etched glass looks cloudy even when it is clean and dry. At that point the fix is window restoration, not washing.
How to prevent new spots
- Turn sprinkler heads away from the house and check them after any landscaping work.
- Water early in the morning so drops dry slower.
- Dry windows that get hit by the hose instead of letting them air dry.
- Keep the glass clean on a schedule so deposits never get a chance to build up.
How we handle it
We remove mineral buildup with products made for glass and finish with a purified water rinse that dries without leaving new spots. If the glass is already etched, we will tell you and talk through restoration options. A maintenance schedule is the best way to stay ahead of it in the desert.
